We have a question for you… what is your HR strategy? Businesses need a strategy that includes their people. The one you choose should be the one that is best suited for both the business and those working within it. Getting this right should allow for success, working alongside employees to enable business objectives to come to fruition.
So how do you go about this?
Begin by thinking about the type of strategy you want to put into action. Do you want to devise a strategy that looks at the entire business? Or do you want to target a particular area within the company? Understanding this will then help you to go on and pick the strategy that is right for your business.
The strategy you select will depend on a number of criteria, otherwise known as a SWOT analysis. SWOT refers to strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats specific to your business, and having a clear idea of what these all are is important when it comes to your HR strategy.
Choosing your HR strategy
There are several different strategy types to choose from – recruitment, retention, considering succession and compensation management being some of them. The one you go for will be the strategy that allows you to get the most from the people within your business. What is right for one organisation may not be right for another, so there is no “one size fits all solution”. This is where your SWOT analysis comes in.
How do you identify your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats? You can speak to those within the business and see what they have to say. You can also take a closer look at your employees, including understanding the skills they have and why they choose to either leave or remain in their role. Whilst it’s important to listen to individual opinions, it’s also advisable to keep in mind that the different areas of your company all need to work together… very often an approach that brings different departments together will be advantageous.
You’ll also need to make sure you are prepared for the future, whatever it may bring! Having the ability to be flexible will stand you in good stead – a lesson we all learnt during the pandemic.
The importance of devising the right HR strategy should not be underestimated. Your employees are vital to the success of your business, and devoting time to ensure they are happy, content and motivated is key.
