The way in which an employee performs within the workplace is often a key factor in determining the difference between success and failure within a business. Quantifying this can be relatively easy to establish (and often will include how a business is doing financially). When it comes to employees however, this is likely going to be a more complex process involving a number of different factors. One way to gauge performance is via employee appraisals.
Employee appraisals
Appraisals allow you to figure out how an employee is getting on. You can highlight what they’ve done well, what they bring to the business on an individual basis and areas in which they need to improve.
Carrying out appraisals gives the employee (and you!) an opportunity to work towards a designated date. This can often result in increased and improved performance, engagement and motivation. It is essential that you have the correct appraisal process in place for your business to ensure a positive outcome.
There is no right or wrong way to go about this. Instead, choose the appraisal process that fits in best with your organisation. This may be either formal or informal. However whichever you opt for, it is critical that it allows for and encourages two-way communication between employer and employee.

Legislation changes
It is at this point that it would be prudent to mention plans announced by the government, whereby the two year qualifying service for unfair dismissal is set to be removed. This means it is even more important to have all the correct processes and procedures in place. And if you don’t already have? This is our recommendation that you do so as soon as possible!
We also wanted to remind you of the upcoming Employee Appreciation Day on the 7th March. This is the ideal time for you to actively demonstrate what you appreciate and value about your employees. For a full list of Employee Awareness Days, click here.
