As an employer, you have a number of responsibilities towards your employees. Many of these are obvious, including areas such as management of working hours, wages and health and safety. However, employers also have what is classed as a “duty of care”. In other words, as an employer, you should be taking employee well-being into account.
Advantages of promoting employee well-being
The advantages of promoting and encouraging employee well-being are wide-ranging. If an employee feels positive and enthused in the workplace, it is likely that their productivity, attendance and motivation will improve. You may also find that staff turnover decreases. After all, if an employee is happy where they are, why would they look elsewhere for a job?
And speaking of looking for jobs, encouraging good well-being can have a positive impact on prospective employees looking to progress their careers. A healthy and engaging workplace is very attractive to many, making staff recruitment an easier and less stressful task.
Promoting employee well-being
So how can you promote employee well-being? Although there isn’t one definitive answer, offering support (both in relation to work and health), promoting a good work-life balance and ensuring the provision of career prospects are all good places to start. There is also an extensive list of “Employee Awareness Days” that may be of interest. This is where businesses can choose to honour designated days/weeks/months that seek to raise awareness of a myriad of causes. These can be very beneficial when it comes to the promotion of employee well-being. Some of these awareness days have become very well known. These include Dry January, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and Stoptober.
